Equal opportunities & inclusion
King's Grammar School is committed to being a school where every child can thrive, regardless of their background, family circumstances, ability, or starting point. This policy describes how we work to make that real, in admissions, in the classroom, and in the day-to-day life of the school.
Our commitments
- We treat every child as an individual, with the dignity that comes from being made in the image of God.
- We do not discriminate on the basis of race, nationality, ethnicity, language, faith, gender, family circumstances, disability, or any other personal characteristic protected by Malagasy law or international good practice.
- We seek to remove barriers to learning wherever we find them.
- We celebrate the diversity of our school community, in a city and a country that have always been a meeting point of cultures.
In admissions
Places are offered on the principles set out in the Admissions Policy: open, fair, and non-discriminatory. Bursaries make it possible for academically capable children from a wider range of family backgrounds to attend.
In the classroom
- Teaching plans are designed so that every child can access the lesson, with appropriate support or stretch.
- Children with identified additional needs are supported through the SEND policy and an individual plan agreed with parents.
- The curriculum reflects the world our children live in: Malagasy history and culture, the wider Indian Ocean, and the global stories that shape modern life.
- Reading materials, displays, and examples used in lessons are reviewed regularly to ensure they represent a wide range of voices.
Faith and religious dimension
King's Grammar School is a Christian school. Daily worship and weekly RE lessons reflect that. We welcome children of every faith and none, and we ask only that families respect the school's tradition. Children are not pressured to participate beyond the level appropriate to a school worship setting, and parents may discuss particular accommodations with the Head.
Language
We teach in English, with French daily, and we celebrate Malagasy as a home and cultural language. Children whose first language is not English are supported through additional reading and language work, and their home language is respected and used in cultural studies.
Disability and accessibility
We make reasonable adjustments to enable children with physical or learning disabilities to participate fully in school life. Where the school's facilities or expertise cannot meet a child's specific needs, we are open with families about that, and work with them to plan the best route forward, at King's or elsewhere.
Staff and recruitment
We recruit on the basis of qualifications, experience, and suitability for the post. We seek a teaching team that reflects the international community we serve, and we work hard to build a workplace where every member of staff is treated with respect.
When something goes wrong
If a child, parent, or member of staff believes they have been discriminated against, they should raise it under the Complaints Policy. We will take it seriously, investigate honestly, and respond clearly.
