Head's welcome

We built this school for our own children first.

Dear parent,

Thank you for considering King's Grammar School for your child. I want to tell you, plainly, what kind of school we are — so that you can decide whether we are the right one for you.

We are a serious primary school. We teach children to read fluently in English by the end of Year 1, to know their times tables by the end of Year 4, and to write a clear paragraph from memory by the end of Year 6. We follow the Cambridge International Primary curriculum, taught in English, with French daily from Nursery and Malagasy celebrated as a home language.

We are a Christian school. That shapes who we are: daily worship, weekly Bible teaching, and the virtues of honesty, courage, kindness, and reverence woven into every lesson. We do not require families to be Christian, and children of all faiths and none are warmly welcomed. What we ask is that families respect the tradition that shapes the school's character.

We are a school for Toamasina. We are not a satellite of a school in the capital, and we do not look down on the city we are in. Our storybooks are set on the east coast. Our calendar follows the rhythms of Madagascar. Our staff — Malagasy, French, and English-speaking alike — chose to be here.

And we are a school that knows your child. Class sizes are kept small, no more than eighteen children, so that every teacher can tell you exactly where your child is in their reading, in their maths, in their character. We do not pass children through. We teach them.

The best way to understand any school is to visit it. Please come and see us. Bring your child. Ask hard questions. We will be honest with you about what we are good at and what we are still building.

I look forward to meeting you.
