Behaviour policy
At King's Grammar School we hold every child to a high standard of conduct, expressed through four virtues: excellence, compassion, honesty, and courage. This policy describes how we teach behaviour, what we expect, how we recognise good conduct, and what happens when a child falls short.
What we expect
- Pursue excellence. Do your best work, take pride in what you make, and keep going when it gets hard.
- Show compassion. Treat every adult and every child with kindness and respect.
- Be honest. Tell the truth, own up to mistakes, and put things right.
- Be courageous. Try hard things, speak up when you see something wrong, and do the right thing even when it's difficult.
- Move calmly. Walk in corridors, line up quietly, and arrive on time and ready to learn.
How we teach behaviour
Good behaviour is taught, not assumed. Expectations are explained and modelled at the start of each year and revisited throughout it. Class teachers reinforce expectations daily, in clear and respectful language. We name the virtues when we see them, and when they are missing.
Recognising good conduct
- Verbal praise from teachers, named to the specific virtue or effort.
- House points awarded for effort, kindness, and progress, contributing to a termly house competition.
- Postcards home from class teachers for exceptional conduct or effort.
- End-of-year recognition for the four virtues at the leavers' service.
When a child falls short
We respond firmly, calmly, and proportionately. The aim is always to restore the child and to put right whatever has gone wrong.
- Step 1. A clear verbal reminder, naming what was expected and what needs to happen.
- Step 2. A brief consequence: time out within the classroom, missed minutes of break, a moved seat.
- Step 3. Removal from the lesson for a short reflective period with another adult. The child's class teacher informs parents.
- Step 4. Meeting between the Head, the parents, and the child to agree a plan of support.
- Step 5. In exceptional and persistent cases, suspension or exclusion (see below).
Suspension and exclusion
Suspension (a short period away from school) and exclusion (permanent removal) are used only as a last resort, and only when other steps have not worked or the safety of others is at stake. The decision is taken by the Head Teacher in consultation with the trustees. Families have the right to be heard in writing before any final decision and to appeal to the Chair of Trustees.
Physical contact and restraint
Staff do not use physical punishment, ever. In rare cases where a child is at risk of harming themselves or others, staff may use the minimum physical contact necessary to keep everyone safe. Any such incident is recorded, reported to parents the same day, and reviewed by the DSL.
Behaviour outside school
The school's expectations apply when children are in uniform, on school trips, in school transport, or otherwise acting as representatives of King's. Serious behaviour outside school that affects the welfare of other pupils may also be addressed under this policy.
